Ripple is a cryptocurrency platform whose transactional protocol is known as XRP, like the relationship between Ethereum and its currency Ether. Unlike most cryptocurrencies which require mining to generate new tokens, Ripple was created with all 100 billion of its tokens already in existence. It does not rely on a network of developers for continued development, instead it is backed by the company that originally founded it, Ripple Labs. They utilize a distributed ledger network for validating transactions, making global transfers cheaper than other options like Bitcoin. The majority of the tokens are owned by Ripple Labs and it's estimated to be sitting on around $20 billion worth of the cryptocurrency. Rather than creating an alternative to traditional banking structures like most cryptos, Ripple Labs aims to use its technology to enable faster banking transactions worldwide.
