Xahau is a smart contract sidechain for the XRPL ecosystem, introducing "Hooks" to enable smart contract functionality directly on the XRPL. These Hooks are small pieces of code that live in Xahau accounts and check transactions against specified rules that Hooks set. This makes it possible for transactions to be executed safely and automatically. Xahau XRP (XAH) is the currency of the network, acting as a utility token to purchase network services, and it is also used to compute the fee for each transaction based on the complexity of the Hook.
Hooks are optimal for enhancing XRPL's functionality due to their tight integration with the underlying blockchain technology. They are executed directly on the XRPL ledger, unlike Layer 2 smart contracts, which execute on separate sidechains. This native integration provides maximum efficiency and flexibility.
