Viacoin is a Scrypt-based cryptocurrency derived from Bitcoin. It is an open-source project designed to integrate innovative technologies such as SegWit, APoW, Lightning Network, Dark Gravity Wave, and more. One of the key features of Viacoin is its ability to process transactions 25 times faster than Bitcoin. This is achieved through its shorter blocktime of 24 seconds compared to Bitcoin’s 10 minutes.
Technology
Viacoin uses the Scrypt consensus algorithm, which was chosen for its ASIC-resistant properties. However, this resistance was lost with the development of ASIC units capable of mining Scrypt-based coins. To increase security and efficiency, Viacoin has implemented Auxiliary Proof-of-Work (AuxPoW) for merged mining with other cryptocurrencies like Litecoin.
Merged Mining
Merged mining allows two different cryptocurrencies to be mined simultaneously. This method reduces the electricity required for mining, providing an advantage for miners. Additionally, the secondary chain gains increased security due to the hash power of the more established chain.
Lightning Network & Segregated Witness
Viacoin has adopted support for the Lightning Network and Segregated Witness (SegWit), enabling off-chain payment channels and reducing transaction sizes. This facilitates atomic swaps, allowing direct exchange between Viacoin and other cryptocurrencies without relying on centralized exchanges.
Speed Advantage
Viacoin’s blocktime of 24 seconds gives it a significant speed advantage over Bitcoin’s 10-minute blocktime. This means that transactions are finalized much faster on the Viacoin network.

Block Reward & Inflation
Every six months, Viacoin halves the block reward for mining, resulting in a low inflation rate. This ensures a stable long-term supply of Viacoin.
