Peercoin, one of the first cryptocurrencies, was activated in 2012. It was a pioneer in the proof-of-stake consensus, making it an efficient and sustainable public blockchain technology. Based largely on bitcoin's source code and technical foundation, Peercoin has several distinguishing features, including no hard cap on the number of possible coins and an intended annual inflation rate of 1%. It's also a deflationary currency thanks to a transaction fee paid to the network. While Peercoin is 100 times more energy efficient than Bitcoin, it initially faced fierce competition from other cryptocurrencies offering more attractive features. The Peercoin team now focuses on developing second layer protocols and sub-networks to improve the blockchain's functionality, making it adaptable for wide scale use while maintaining the security and decentralization of the network.
