BitShares (BTS), previously known as ProtoShares (PTS), is a peer-to-peer crypto-equity first conceived in 2014 by co-founder of Steemit, EOS, and Cryptonomex, Dan Larimer. BitShares operates on Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) algorithm and is based on Graphene, an open source C++ blockchain implementation used for consensual decision-making. This technology also powers platforms like Steemit.com and PeerPlay.com. BitShares competes with traditional banking systems by issuing collateralizing market-pegged and stable bitAssets, which are crypto-based assets that track real-world market assets like the US dollar. It also provides a high-performance decentralized exchange capable of handling NASDAQ-level trading volumes, offering a viable alternative to current financial platforms. BitShares is a legacy coin as it precedes most exchanges and is the first-ever delegated Proof of Stake blockchain.
