PIVX, a user data protection-focused blockchain and cryptocurrency project, was announced in November 2015 and launched in January 2016. The decentralized open-source platform was initially based on proof of work but switched to a proof of stake protocol in August 2016. PIVX relies on the SHIELD protocol for user data protection and does not have an ICO, instamine, or perpetual developer premine. It has also introduced additional features such as a Masternode network for decentralized voting and zk-SNARKs Sapling for anonymity in transactions and staking. The supply of PIV, the platform's native cryptocurrency, is determined by a fixed block emission rate and monthly budget allocation payouts, and is also restrained by the burning of transaction fees. PIV is used for user data preservation, quick digital currency a exchange, rewards for contributors, and also allows individuals to participate in the PIVX network.
