Namecoin is a domain name registry service which was the first coin to fork Bitcoin. Created in 2011 by an anonymous founder named "Vince," it allows users to register .bit domains that are resistant to censorship and tracking. It uses blockchain technology to distribute its domain name services, ensuring the prevention of certain levels of control and censorship by governments and big corporations. The Namecoin project has been sustained by a team of developers who regularly release updates. Namecoin introduced a mining consensus feature that allows simultaneous mining of it and Bitcoin, as well as NameID, which is essentially a decentralized service for registering meaningful names securely. Despite being one of the earliest cryptocurrencies, it has received little attention till recently and it's no longer among the top ten by market capitalization, due in part to the introduction of many new cryptocurrencies.
