Counterparty is a protocol and API that allows users to create and trade assets on Bitcoin’s blockchain, thus making it similar to platforms like Waves or Ethereum. Although it is an old platform, having pre-dated Ethereum upon its launch in 2014, Counterparty has since faded from prominence due to the rise of the ERC-20 token standard on Ethereum. Its use cases include markers of ownership, voting rights, digital shares, etc. It is built on the Bitcoin blockchain for additional security and reliability, but is not as strong a platform for development as its competitors.
