Reserve Rights (RSR) is an ERC-20 token that plays a crucial role in the Reserve Protocol. Launched in May 2019, RSR serves two primary functions: facilitating the stability of the Reserve stablecoin (RSV) through overcollateralization via staking and governing the RSV token through proposing and voting on changes to its configuration. Reserve aims to build a stable, decentralized, asset-backed cryptocurrency and a digital payment system that scales supply with demand and maintains 100% or more collateral backing.

Understanding the Reserve Protocol

The Reserve protocol is a decentralized system that allows users to create and manage asset-backed tokens called RTokens. These tokens are issued on the Ethereum blockchain and are fully redeemable for their underlying collateral, which can include other stablecoins or tokenized assets. The protocol includes a governance mechanism that defines the asset basket and allows for changes to it in the case of a primary collateral asset defaulting.

Key Components of the Reserve Protocol

  1. RSV (Reserve Token): A stable cryptocurrency that can be held and spent like traditional fiat money. It is backed by a basket of tokenized assets and maintains parity with the US dollar.
  2. RSR (Reserve Rights Token): A protocol token used for facilitating the stability of RSV and governing the Reserve protocol. It is a utility token that allows holders to propose and vote on changes to the RSV configuration.
  3. Collateral Tokens: Other assets held by the Reserve smart contract to back the value of the Reserve token. These can include tokenized real-world assets such as stocks, bonds, gold, real estate, and more.

Goals and Usage

The long-term goal of Reserve is to create a universal store of value, particularly in regions with unreliable banking infrastructure and regions where hyperinflation is an issue. The Reserve app has seen strong adoption in countries with high inflation rates, such as Venezuela and Argentina. The decentralized nature of the Reserve protocol aims to provide a secure and stable monetary system that is resistant to censorship and inflation.
