The Rook Protocol is an open settlement engine that leverages sophisticated algorithmic strategies to maximize the value of every transaction for protocols, market makers, and traders. The protocol operates through a network of Keepers, which are advanced bots that receive signed orders or transactions before they are sent to the blockchain. These Keepers use the information from the transactions to construct more profitable versions, send them to the blockchain, and settle them on behalf of the user. If any extra profits are discovered in the form of Miner Extractable Value (MEV), the Keeper shares it with the user.

Rook enables generalized MEV to be internalized at the application layer, allowing more value to remain with users and smart contracts rather than being extracted at the consensus layer. This functionality complements systems like Flashbots and enhances the overall transaction experience. Users do not need to pay gas fees, as they do not directly settle the transactions. Instead, they can benefit from the MEV profits made by the Keeper, similar to payment-for-order-flow in traditional finance.

The protocol is entirely compatible with various settlement methods, including Flashbots, Eden, and the public mempool, and supports transactions on any blockchain and against off-chain liquidity sources. Users can interact with the protocol via APIs catering to specific use cases like market making, trading, and smart contracts.
