Overview of Hermez Network
Hermez Network is a decentralized zk-rollup primarily focused on scaling payments and token transfers on the Ethereum network. It aims to reduce the cost of transactions significantly while supporting community projects through its Proof-of-Donation mechanism.
Key Features
Technology
Hermez utilizes zero-knowledge (zk) proof technology to ensure computational integrity and on-chain data availability. This mechanism is based on zk-SNARKs, which require trusted setup to operate. All data needed for proof construction is published on Ethereum L1, ensuring its availability.
Security
Each update to the system state must be accompanied by a zk proof that ensures the new state was derived correctly from the previous state. These proofs are verified by a smart contract on Ethereum. However, zk-SNARKs are still experimental cryptography and rely on time to prove their security. Funds can be stolen if the cryptography is broken or implemented incorrectly.
Governance and Block Production
The system operates an auction where anyone can bid to become an operator for a set number of blocks. The operator proposes blocks and collects fees. In case no one bids, a backup operator known as the boot coordinator will propose blocks.
Withdrawal Mechanism
Users can initiate withdrawals by submitting a regular transaction. Once the block containing that transaction is proven, funds become available for withdrawal on L1. Users must then submit an L1 transaction to claim the funds, which requires a merkle proof. There are measures in place to protect against censorship and ensure timely withdrawal of funds.
Token and Ecosystem
The Hermez Network token is HEZ, which can be traded on various exchanges. The network has a Proof-of-Donation mechanism, where block creators are selected through a burn auction. Instead of burning tokens, 40% of the winning bid is donated to support Ethereum public goods through grants.

Hermez Network is designed to be integrated with the Ethereum ecosystem, allowing users to leverage its scalability while maintaining the security and compatibility of the Ethereum public blockchain.
