Gridcoin incentivizes people to dedicate their computing power towards scientific research tackling significant problems without additional costs to merchants and users. It utilizes a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, which consumes less than 0.01% of the energy used by proof-of-work currencies like Bitcoin. Consequently, Gridcoin is environmentally friendly and efficient.
To earn GRC, users need to participate in scientific computing projects through BOINC. The amount of GRC earned is based on the participant's recent average credit (RAC) within a project. This ensuring that participants are rewarded for their contributions to scientific research. The cryptocurrency's wallet and user interface are built using Qt 5, and executables are distributed for Windows, macOS, and Debian.
Gridcoin's implementation, Gridcoin-Research, is a fork of Bitcoin and Peercoin, licensed under the MIT License. It is actively maintained by the Gridcoin Community and available on GitHub.
