Operations

This technology distributes sensitive operations across multiple independent entities, like nodes in a network, and requires a minimum number of those entities to cooperate for the operation to be successful. Threshold cryptography uses a "secret sharing" mechanism, where the secret key is split across multiple parties. Then, if some (up to a certain threshold) of these parties are corrupted, the key secrecy remains uncompromised.

Key Characteristics

• Fault-tolerance: Threshold cryptography ensures that even if one or more individuals are unavailable, the secret can be unlocked and doesn’t cause bottlenecks. This makes the system fault-tolerant.
• Minimum threshold: The threshold number is set up so as to reflect a majority of a given cluster. For example, a cluster of 10 may have the threshold set at 7, meaning that a minimum of 7 cluster participants will need to cooperate for a decryption to be successful.
• Collaboration without complete key visibility: Threshold cryptography ensures that collaboration can take place while maintaining informational privacy, without requiring keyholders to see one another’s parts of the key.

Applications

Threshold cryptography can be applied to any cryptographic primitive, such as key generation, signing, encryption, and decryption. This technique is useful to avoid various single-points of failure in the implementation and to distribute trust across various operators.

History

Threshold cryptography has its roots in the early 1990s and has since been adopted by various cryptographic protocols for different purposes, including secure multi-party computation, trusted setups, and replacing MultiSig applications.
