Swarm is a decentralized storage and communication service based on a peer-to-peer network of nodes. It operates economically through a self-sustaining system enabled by the BZZ token and smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.

The BZZ Token

BZZ tokens are the native cryptocurrency of Swarm, used for data relay, storage services, and as compensation for node operators who provide these services. Users can acquire BZZ tokens through centralized and decentralized exchanges, and use them for various purposes:

  • Data Storage and Relay: BZZ is used by publishers to store data on the Swarm network securely for extended periods.
  • Node Operations: Node operators receive BZZ tokens in exchange for providing data storage services.
  • Staking: BZZ is required as a non-refundable stake to operate a Swarm full node and earn additional BZZ tokens.
  • DApp Development: BZZ can be used to reserve space on the Swarm network for hosting censorship-resistant decentralized applications.

  • Swarm nodes are incentivized through a built-in system enforced by smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain.
  • BZZ tokens are the primary medium of exchange for data storage and relay services.
