A supermoon is a full moon that occurs when the Moon is at its closest point in its elliptical orbit to Earth, known as perigee. This close proximity makes the Moon appear larger and brighter in the night sky compared to a regular full moon. The term "supermoon" is astrological in origin, but it is widely used to describe this astronomic phenomenon.

- The Moon appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than it does when it is at its farthest point (apogee) due to its closer proximity.
- A supermoon occurs when the Moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth.
- The Moon's 27-day orbit is elliptical, resulting in a varying distance between the Earth and Moon, ranging from approximately 363,300 to 405,500 kilometers.
- The phenomenon is often used to describe both new and full moons, but new moons are less frequently labeled as supermoons.
Observing a Supermoon
- The best time to observe a supermoon is during moonrise or moonset when it appears near the horizon. This can create an optical illusion known as the Moon illusion, making it seem even larger.
- Using binoculars or a small telescope can enhance the details of the Moon's surface.
- Taking photos of the supermoon can help highlight the slight difference in size over a regular full moon.
