StarkNet
StarkNet is a permissionless decentralized Layer 2 (L2) validity rollup, built to enable Ethereum to scale using cryptographic protocols called STARKs, without compromising Ethereum’s core principles of decentralization, transparency, inclusivity, and security. The StarkNet Token (STRK) is required to operate the ecosystem, maintain and secure it, decide on its values and strategic goals, and direct its evolution. It serves three key purposes: governance, payment of transaction fees on StarkNet, and participation in StarkNet’s consensus mechanism.
Token Distribution
Ten billion STRK tokens have been minted off-chain by StarkWare, with a circulating supply that will increase over time according to a schedule determined by the community. The allocation consists of 17% for StarkWare Investors, 32.9% for Core Contributors (StarkWare employees and partners), and 50.1% for the StarkNet Foundation. Tokens allocated to Core Contributors and Investors are subject to a 4-year lock-up period with linear release and a one-year cliff.

StarkNet operates as an L2 network over Ethereum, allowing any decentralized application (dApp) to achieve unlimited scale for its computation without compromising Ethereum’s composability and security. The network employs a cryptographic proof system called STARK, ensuring scalability and security. StarkNet Contracts and the StarkNet OS are written in Cairo, supporting the deployment and scaling of various use cases.
