Helium is an IoT-focused decentralized machine network powered by a physical blockchain. Hotspot operators, who contribute to the network's coverage, earn tokens based on their coverage and transaction fees. There is no initial token allocation, and approximately 5,000,000 new Helium tokens are minted monthly. The tokens are distributed to Hotspot Owners, Helium Inc, and investors.
Hotspots
Hotspots, which can be purchased from various manufacturers, operate as both miners and wireless coverage providers. They use Helium’s LongFi network, combining LoRaWAN and blockchain elements. The network is decentralized and relies on token rewards to incentivize network growth.
LongFi
LongFi offers low-cost IoT connectivity by leveraging unlicensed frequency bands. This achieves a 200-fold coverage compared to WiFi and ensures reliable, decentralized, and secure data transmission. The network’s blockchain ensures that each user has a unique identifier and allows for seamless data exchange without central approval.
Network Scale and Future Developments
Helium has expanded to 65,000 cities and 170 countries, with over a million Hotspots deployed. The project aims to expand beyond IoT, incorporating 5G, WiFi, and VPN protocols to become a comprehensive network infrastructure. This evolution seeks to disrupt centralized telecommunications and improve global connectivity.
