Overview
Butterfly Protocol aims to create a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) that will replace the traditional DNS system and change the economics of domain ownership. This project seeks to create a lasting, self-sustaining economy by incubating a DAO Registrar with its own tokens, allowing for a decentralized, censorship-resistant naming system on the blockchain.
Key Features
Decentralized Naming System
Butterfly Protocol allows for the creation of blockchain domains, offering true ownership and flexible naming possibilities, including the use of non-ASCII characters and emojis. This system also enables one name to support multiple connections, such as linking to a website, a secure message, or a crypto wallet.
Governance and Control
The DAO structure ensures that the control of domain names is decentralized and not controlled by a central authority. This gives users full control over their domains without the need for annual payments.
Upgradeability
All aspects of the system, from record storage to domain pointers, can be upgraded.
User-Friendly Access
A simple browser extension allows users to access the new internet seamlessly, without needing to set up servers or understand technical DNS details.
Token-Based Economy
The system uses its own utility token, BFLY, to facilitate the creation and management of top-level domains. This token-based economy allows users to suggest, sponsor, or bid on new domain names and receive shares of tokens associated with those names, enabling the growth of the decentralized web.
