Backed is a project that brings real-world assets like stocks or ETFs to the blockchain. Its unique aspect lies in issuing permissionless tokens (bTokens) that represent ownership of structured products, with each token being 1:1 backed by underlying assets held by Swiss third-party custodians. Incorporated in Switzerland in 2021 for its regulatory assistance, Backed released its first tokenized product on Ethereum in Q1 2023 and now supports various blockchains. It aims to create a standard for tokenization with protocols benefiting from on-chain real-world assets. Backed enables clients to achieve sustainable, low-risk yields while keeping their funds entirely on-chain, eliminating the need for conventional financial onboarding processes or off-ramping crypto to fiat. However, it doesn't sell its tokens to U.S citizens or to benefit U.S citizens.
