Augur is a trustless, decentralized platform for prediction markets built on the Ethereum blockchain. It allows users to create markets for specific questions or events and to profit from the trading buys while allowing users to purchase positive or negative shares regarding the outcome of a future event. Augur’s native token, called Reputation (REP), is used to create markets, report on, and resolve their outcomes. All useful actions on Augur, including making good predictions, creating markets that people want to trade in, and honestly reporting on outcomes, are incentivized and rewarded.
Prediction markets are created to trade the probability of an event happening. The market prices indicate what the crowd thinks the probability of an event happening. Prediction markets have been shown to be effective in accurately forecasting many results, but they are not widely used due to regulatory hurdles involved in setting up such a market. Augur aims to set up such a market in a decentralized manner.
Augur allows users to create and trade shares representing a portion of the value of outcomes without relying on a company to create or manage these markets. Users can bet on sports, economics, world events, and more without needing to rely on a central authority. The platform is designed to be trustworthy, accessible, and low-fee, allowing users to keep more of their winnings.
In contrast to traditional betting markets, Augur incentivizes crowdsourced truth-seeking by leveraging decentralization. Users can create a prediction market on the Augur crypto platform, so long as the market represents a real-world event that can be confirmed with a definitive outcome at the conclusion of a set period of time. The platform was one of the first to raise funds through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) in 2015, and since its launch in 2018, it has grown significantly.
