Asch is a project that pays tribute to Solomon Asch, a Polish-American social psychologist renowned for his groundbreaking study on conformity. In 1951, Asch conducted an experiment on the impact of social pressure from a group on individual decision-making. This study delved into conformity, which involves matching the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of a group based on conventional social norms and standards. He demonstrated that a significant majority of individuals will conform to group pressure even when they know the answer is wrong. The experiment involved presenting participants with a line task where the correct answer was clear, and then exploring whether they would conform to an incorrect group consensus. Asch's findings showed that 75% of participants conformed at least once during the critical trials, despite knowing the correct answer. This study has had lasting impacts on psychology and continues to influence research on the effects of social pressure, group dynamics, and decision-making.
