The News
Mastercard and Google Partner up with Coinbase
Coinbase customers will be given the opportunity to use credit as well as debit cards issued by Mastercard as a means to make purchases within the Coinbase NFT marketplace. Last year, Coinbase unveiled that they have plans to launch a platform dedicated to allowing users to mint and buy NFTs, which exploded in terms of popularity throughout the last 12 months.
Google’s engineering vice president, Shivakumar Venkataraman, will assist the company with diving into the blockchain space. Google Labs will focus on blockchain and distributed computing. Google Pay also partnered up with Coinbase in an effort to store cryptocurrencies in “digital cards” while having users pay in traditional currencies.
Microsoft bought Activision for $68.7 billion
After the announcement that Microsoft would be acquiring Activision Blizzard, Microsoft CEO and Chairman Satya Nadella stated that gaming will play a major role in the development of metaverse platforms. As such, Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion as a means towards pushing their gaming and metaverse plans forward.
The firm will acquire Activision Blizzard for $95.00 per share at a valuation of $68.7 billion, and the deal is set to close in the 2023 fiscal year, which will see Microsoft become the third-largest gaming company in terms of revenue, behind Tencent and PlayStation.
The largest Bitcoin fund sank near a 30% discount
Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, a $27 billion fund, plunged 17% throughout 2022, outpacing Bitcoin’s decline of 9%, according to data from Bloomberg. In other words, GBTC’s price closed 26.5% under the value of the Bitcoin that it held, something that widened the “discount” to record levels.
Grayscale Investment LLC applied to the Securities and Exchange Commission in October to convert GBTC into an ETF. The Grayscale parent company, Digital Currency Group, attempted to repair the discount by buying back GBTC shares.
Cardano scaling plans move to Basho Phase for 2022, and Cardano enters the metaverse with Pavia
The Cardano project is entering the Basho Phase, which sees both on and off-chain improvements to the Cardano ecosystem. It will deal with optimization and scaling as a means of solving potential issues surrounding the anticipated surge in Cardano-based decentralized applications.
The Pavia metaverse platform, as well as its native in-game currency, are built on top of the Cardano blockchain network. Pavia will be a play-to-earn game, which has its native token trading on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) already. The game is currently a work-in-progress, where players can be customized, but owned land cannot be developed yet.
Twitter integrates NFTs, while Facebook and Instagram are exploring NFT Integration
Twitter brought NFT integration to its platform, and users have to pay $2.99 per month through the company’s Twitter Blue subscription, as well as an iOS device, in order to utilize this feature.
Users can now link their Ether-based wallets to their accounts and display their digital collectibles as their profile images.
Facebook’s operator Meta and Instagram are exploring plans which would allow NFTs to be used as profile pictures. The plans include the showcasing, minting as well as selling of NFTs.
