A term originating from the indigenous Aymara people of the Andes region, Waru Waru refers to an ancient agricultural technique developed by pre-Hispanic communities in present-day Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. This method involves raised field agriculture, utilizing parallel canals alternated by raised planting beds, which efficiently utilizes floodplains and strategically locates fields for irrigation benefits. Waru Waru fields demonstrate a higher agricultural yield due to the enhanced soil quality resulting from aquatic plants and organic materials. This technique also protects crops from freezing temperatures and supports the growth of crops like potatoes and quinoa. Waru Waru is primarily associated with the Tiwanaku culture around Lake Titicaca and dates back to around 300 B.C.
