Upper Euro is a token backed by the European currency and utilizing a token model similar to Bitcoin’s UTXO. This central bank digital currency (CBDC) follows a token-based design and UTXO ledger, though it does not employ blockchain. In the Upper Euro prototype, users do not control their private keys; these are held by wallet service providers to enhance end-user usability. The digital euro includes features such as maximum holding limits, automatic sweeping of excess proceeds into linked bank accounts, and offline usage with irreversible transactions.
