UFO stands for Unidentified Flying Object. Research into UFOs began in the 1940s to investigate sightings of strange aerial phenomena that could not be explained by known scientific knowledge. These phenomena were initially referred to as flying saucers but later became known as UFOs.

The U.S. Air Force officially studied UFOs through Project BLUE BOOK from 1947 to 1969. During this period, a total of 12,618 reported sightings were investigated, with 701 remaining unexplained.

These investigations were conducted to determine any potential threats to national security, but no evidence was found to support extraterrestrial origins or advanced technological capabilities. Most sightings were attributed to natural phenomena or man-made objects.

Public interest in UFO sightings peaked in the 1950s and 1960s, leading to continued research though University studies and other governmental agencies. However, the official Air Force project was discontinued in 1969 due to the lack of any scientific evidence of a threat or extraterrestrial origins.
