Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto, also known as Tsukuyomi or Tsukiyomi, is the moon kami in Japanese mythology and the Shinto religion. The name "Tsukuyomi" is a compound of the Old Japanese words tsuku (月, "moon, month", becoming modern Japanese tsuki) and yomi (読み, "reading, counting"). The Nihon Shoki mentions this name spelled as Tsukuyumi (月弓, "moon bow"), but this yumi is likely a variation in pronunciation of yomi. An alternative interpretation is that his name is a combination of tsukiyo (月夜, "moonlit night") and mi (見, "looking, watching").

Tsukuyomi was born to Izanagi, one of the Japanese creator gods, and his wife Izanami. He is known for his focus on etiquette and order, often to the point of using violence to enforce these ideals. His actions led to the estrangement from his wife, the sun goddess Amaterasu, who refused to see him again after he killed Ukemochi, the goddess of food.

As a result, Tsukuyomi is now associated with the night, constantly chasing Amaterasu across the sky. This struggle is said to be the origin of day and night. Despite his significant role in Japanese mythology, details about Tsukuyomi are scarce and even his gender remains a topic of debate.
