The Graph is essentially an open-source-based software which is used for the collection, processing and storing of data from different blockchain applications. This is intended to facilitate information retrieval.

The Graph has the ability to analyze and gather blockchain data before it is stored into Subgraphs which allow any app to send a query to its protocol and receive a response immediately.

Queries are posed by dApps through GraphQL which is a language created by Facebook to gather data for the news feed of its users.

It originally launched on the Ethereum blockchain with the intention of helping developers use data to increase the efficiency of their decentralized applications or dApps.

The users who provide services to the network are known as indexers and delegators. They help process the data and pass it onto the end-users as well as applications.

The GRT Token Explained

Discussing the GRT token, it is The Graph’s native cryptocurrency.

Its main usage is to ensure the integrity of the data is secured within its network and any user has to stake GRT in order to perform their roles and earn fees from the network.

Features of The Graph

The Graph’s aggregating data occurs through what is known as Graph Nodes. These continuously have to scan the network blocks as well as the smart contracts for the information.

When an application adds data into the blockchain through the usage of said smart contracts, a Graph node has to add the data from these blocks to the appropriate Subgraph.

Once the Graph Node extracts information, there are a total of three types of users that can contribute to the organization of this data. The first type of users are the curators, which are Subgraph developers who assess which ones are quality enough and required to be indexed by The Graph itself. Curators can attach CRT to the subgraphs that they genuinely think make the cut. Indexers are the second type of users which are node operators that have the task of providing indexing and querying services for the signaled subgraphs. They have to stake GRT in order to provide these services. Last but not least you have the delegators, which, as the name implies, delegate GRT to indexers with the intention to contribute to running the network without installing a node.

Founders of The Graph (GRT)

The Graph was founded by a team of professionals from multiple spheres, such as OpenZeppelin, Decentraland, MuleSoft, Ethereum Foundation, and more.

However, the co-founding team includes Yaniv Tai, who serves the role of the project lead, Brandon Ramirez, who serves the role of the research lead, and Jannis Pohlmann who serves the role of the tech lead.

Each of them has an engineering background and has actually worked together for many years. They even started a startup together prior to the The Graph project and have spent a large amount of time in their careers working on optimizing the API stack.

In fact, the project has an interesting story, as on their previous startup, they built a custom framework on an immutable database known as Datomic, however, The Graph was created from the vision to create immutable APIs and data access just through the usage of the GraphQL language.
