Bit Gold and Smart Contracts
The concept of "smart property" was developed by Szabo to bring the practices of contract law to electronic commerce protocols. In 1998, he designed a decentralized digital currency called "bit gold," where participants would dedicate computer power to solving cryptographic problems. The solutions were recorded in a public registry, creating a chain of new property that verified and timestamped new coins, ensuring security without a central authority.
Significance and Speculation
Although Szabo has denied it, there has been speculation that he may be Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin. Despite this, his work on smart contracts and digital currency has had significant impacts on the development of cryptocurrencies.
