Solaris

Solaris is a proprietary Unix operating system developed by Sun Microsystems and later acquired by Oracle Corporation in 2010. It was initially released in 1992 as Solaris 2.0. Solaris is known for its scalability, especially on SPARC systems, and its innovative features such as DTrace, ZFS, and Time Slider.

The operating system supports both SPARC and x86-64 workstations and servers from Oracle and other vendors. Solaris uses a monolithic kernel with dynamically loadable modules and a userland that is POSIX-compliant.

Solaris was originally developed as proprietary software, but in 2005, Sun Microsystems released most of its codebase under the CDDL license and founded the OpenSolaris open-source project. Prior to its discontinuation, OpenSolaris aimed to build a developer and user community around the software. Following Oracle's acquisition of Sun Microsystems, the OpenSolaris distribution was discontinued, and the development model was turned back into a closed-source proprietary model.

Historically, Solaris has been under continuous development since the late 1980s. Each major version is based on a snapshot of the development codebase, which is then maintained and updated. The codebase is available to industry partners through the Oracle Technology Network (OTN).
