Sirio represents the Italian Satellite for Industrial Operative Research, which is a geostationary artificial telecommunication satellite. Launched on August 26, 1977, from Cape Canaveral, this satellite was designed to experiment with high-frequency propagation up to 18 GHz. Born from cooperation between the National Research Council and the Aerospace Industry Company, Sirio remained active for eight years. It was used for various experimental activities on propagation phenomena and frequency bands and tested for TV communication by Italian and international research centers.
