The Shark project is a comprehensive initiative focused on studying and tracking the movements and behaviors of tiger sharks in Hawaiʻi. This project aims to gain insights into shark behavior and habitat selection while testing new technologies for satellite tags and data detection methods.

Key Features

• Shark Tracking: The project uses the latest generation of satellite tags attached to the dorsal fins of tiger sharks. These tags send signals whenever the fin breaks the surface, providing insights into shark movements and behaviors.
• Oceanographic Data: The tags record important oceanographic data, including ocean temperature, oxygen profiles, and sea surface temperature, which will be used to improve ocean circulation pattern models and weather forecasting.
• Land-Based Receivers: In addition to satellite transmission, land-based receivers at high elevations around Maui and Oʻahu augment the satellite array, increasing data throughput and allowing for 100% message reception when sharks surface within range.
• Data Availability: Data collected will be made available in near-real time and used to inform models and predict ocean circulation patterns.
