The Digital Rupee, represented by the symbol e₹, is the central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is a form of legal tender, using blockchain distributed-ledger technology, and serves as a digital version of the Indian rupee. The Digital Rupee is issued in the same denominations as paper currency and coins and is distributed through financial intermediaries, such as banks.
Digital Rupee Types
The RBI has launched two types of Digital Rupee pilots: Wholesale (e₹-W) and Retail (e₹-R).
Digital Rupee for Wholesale (e₹-W)
- Launched on November 1, 2022
- Used for settling secondary market transactions in government securities
- Participating banks: State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Yes Bank, IDFC First Bank, and HSBC
- Designed for restricted access to select financial institutions
Digital Rupee for Retail (e₹-R)
- Launched on December 1, 2022
- Used for consumer and business transactions
- Participating banks: Phase 1 includes State Bank of India, ICICI Bank, Yes Bank, and IDFC First Bank; Phase 2 includes Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, HDFC Bank, and Kotak Mahindra Bank
- e₹-R is in the form of a digital token that represents legal tender
- Users can transact with e₹-R through a digital wallet offered by the participating banks
- Features of physical cash like trust, safety, and settlement finality.
