Description of REU (BSC)

REU (BSC) is a summer research program designed to provide undergraduate students with hands-on research experiences, mentorship opportunities, and professional development training in microbiology. Through this 10-week program, participants engage in intensive research projects under the guidance of faculty and graduate student mentors, enhancing their skills and knowledge in biological research.

Goals

The program aims to foster the careers of the next generation of microbiologists by providing students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and networking opportunities to pursue advanced degrees and careers in biological research. It encourages students to pursue a career in basic science and helps bridge the gap between undergraduate studies and graduate-level research.

Tasks and Activities

• Conduct full-time, hands-on research in microbiology, microbial genetics, or molecular biology.
• Attend weekly seminars and workshops on graduate school and career opportunities.
• Engage in enrichment activities that promote student-faculty interaction and student-student collaboration.
• Present research findings in a campus-wide poster session at the end of the program.

Eligibility

The program is open to undergraduate students who:

• Will be returning to their home institution for at least one semester of undergraduate study before graduation.
• Are interested in pursuing graduate school and a career in biological research.
• Are United States citizens or permanent residents.
• Have limited access to research opportunities at their home institution.

Support and Benefits

• Participants receive a stipend of $6,500 and a $1,000 supplement for food and living expenses.
• On-campus housing is provided at no cost to participants.
• The program covers travel costs.

By providing valuable research experiences, professional development, and various support mechanisms, REU (BSC) helps undergraduates develop the skills and confidence needed to succeed in advanced biological research and academia.
