Overview of Plutos Network
Plutos Network is a project that involves the development and implementation of a network of underwater pipelines designed for the transportation of oil. The project was given the codename "PLUTO," which stands for "Pipeline Underwater Transportation of Oil" or "Pipeline Under the Ocean." This operation was placed under the chief of staff to the Supreme Allied Commander, Designate (COSSAC), and was executed by British and American forces.
Operation and Logistics
The pipeline system, which was built in three sections, connected the west coast of England to the Allied front lines in Germany by crossing the English Channel. It was initially powered by Naval forces, who were responsible for the marine aspects, while the Army in the field handled the pipe-lines on the mainland of Europe. The pipeline was designed to have a high capacity and was laid by ships across the English Channel, requiring careful planning and coordination to overcome naval and environmental challenges.
Historical Significance
Operation Pluto played a significant role in supplying the Allied armies during World War II. By VE-Day, the operation had delivered nearly 5.4 million long tons (5.5 million tonnes) of petroleum products to the Allied Expeditionary Force, although the value and tactical importance of the operation have been debated by historians.
Recovery and Salvage
After the war, significant parts of the pipeline were salvaged, and the original components were mostly recovered, with the scrap value exceeding the costs of recovery. Many of the buildings and facilities used for the operation still exist today, primarily on the Isle of Wight.
