Optimism is a Layer 2 blockchain on top of Ethereum, enhancing scalability while maintaining the security of the Ethereum mainnet. The OP token is an ERC-20 governance token allowing holders to participate in the Optimism Collective, which governs upgrades and sets network parameters. Optimism uses optimistic rollups, a data compression technique, to handle transactions faster and more efficiently. The Optimism Collective is divided into the Token House and the Citizens House, with distributed token allocations for ecosystem development, public goods funding, user airdrops, core contributors, and investors.
