Overview

MoonTimer is a writing system specifically designed for the blind and visually impaired, making use of embossed symbols derived from the Latin alphabet. Developed by William Moon, this system aims to be easier to understand than braille and is primarily used by individuals who have lost their sight at an older age and thus have knowledge of letter shapes.

Features

MoonTimer includes a range of features to facilitate reading and writing for the visually impaired. These include:

• Letters: The system uses one Moon character per one Latin character and includes contractions and shorthand for more compact and efficient reading.
• Numbers: Initially using the first ten Latin letters with a "number start" symbol, later versions employ different symbols for each digit, making them more complex to print.
• Punctuation: The system also includes various punctuation symbols.
• Direction: Initially changing direction at the end of lines, it later shifted to a left-to-right orientation.
• Variants: In addition to the original type formed by lines, Dotty Moon or Dotted Moon uses Braille embossers to produce dot patterns in the shape of Moon characters, which are disposed in a 5x5 grid.

Purpose

MoonTimer is designed to be more accessible than braille, particularly for those who have lost their sight at an older age and are already familiar with letter shapes.
