Mooncoin is a decentralized, Proof of Work (PoW) cryptocurrency created on December 30, 2013, by founder Deaconboogie. It uses the Scrypt algorithm, similar to Litecoin, with a faster block speed of 90 seconds compared to Bitcoin's 10 minutes and Litecoin's 2.5 minutes. Mooncoin has a maximum supply of 384 billion coins, calculated as one coin per millimeter of distance between the Earth and the Moon.

Mooncoin began trading on Coinex on December 31, 2013, and later listed on Cryptsy in 2014. However, the_project suffered from a period of dormancy due to health issues faced by the founder, followed by a lack of innovation and community engagement. This inactivity was addressed by a grassroots community effort in 2016, which led to the formation of the Mooncoin Statement of Guiding Principles and the establishment of the Mooncoin Executive as the governing body.
