Definition

Mobula is a genus of rays in the family Mobulidae, found worldwide in tropical and warm, temperate seas. They are characterized as filter feeders, feeding on krill and small fish, and are known for their spectacular breaching patterns, often referred to as "devil rays," "flying mobula," or simply "flying rays."

Characteristics

Mobula rays are long-lived, slow-growing, and reproduce infrequently, making them vulnerable to overexploitation. The genus includes ten species, with eight referred to as devil rays and two as manta rays. They are typically found in large groups, with some species known to leap up to two meters out of the water while feeding or communicating. The rays can grow widths up to 1.1–5.2 m (3.6–17.1 ft), with the largest reaching sizes second only to manta rays.

Habitat and Distribution

Mobula rays inhabit tropical and subtropical waters globally, following oceanographic processes in search of their main prey. In regions such as Baja California, five different species can be found, all of which are listed as threatened under IUCN categorization.

Conservation

The Mobula Conservation Project focuses on researching these species with the goal of developing sustainable conservation methods. Ecotourism, properly managed, can contribute to better conservation and a more sustainable Mobula population.
