Overview

Mimas is a moon of Saturn, named after the mythological son of Gaia in Greek mythology. It is the smallest astronomical body known to be roughly rounded in shape due to its own gravity, with a diameter of 396 kilometers. Mimas has a low density of 1.15 g/cm³, indicating it is composed mostly of water ice with a small amount of rock.

Discovery

Mimas was discovered by William Herschel on September 17, 1789, using his 40-foot reflector telescope. Ground-based astronomers could initially only see Mimas as a small dot until the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged it in 1980. The Cassini spacecraft made several close approaches to Mimas, providing detailed images of its surface.

Characteristics

Mimas is tidally locked, keeping the same face towards Saturn as it orbits. Its surface is heavily cratered, with a notable feature being the giant Herschel impact crater, which stretches a third of the way across the moon. The moon's low density suggests it is mostly composed of water ice, and its eccentric orbit is in resonance with other moons of Saturn, including Tethys, Dione, and Enceladus.
