The Italian Lira (₤, ITL) was the official currency of Italy before it was replaced by the Euro in 1999. It was issued by the Bank of Italy from 1893 and had a long and complex history, with various banknotes and coins serving as legal tender over the years.

History

The Bank of Italy was founded in 1893, initially authorizing the Banco di Napoli and the Banco di Sicilia to issue notes alongside it. The Bank of Italy's authority over lira banknote issuance was further consolidated following a 1981 regulation. The Italian Lira was used extensively until it was eventually replaced by the Euro.

Italian Lira banknotes often featured notable historical figures and cultural icons from Italy, such as Alessandro Volta, Maria Montessori, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, on their designs.
