Overview
Hoichi is a popular figure from Japanese folklore known as a blind minstrel with remarkable skill in playing the biwa, a traditional Japanese lute. He plays particularly well The Tale of the Heike, an epic recounting the struggle between two clans, the Taira and the Minamoto.
Legend Summary
Hōichi lived in poverty at the Amidaji Temple under the care of a friendly priest. One night, a samurai demanded he play his biwa for his lord without the priest's knowledge. Hōichi was led to a nobleman's home where his performance was highly praised and earned a repeat invitation. However, upon his absence being discovered by the priest, it was revealed that Hōichi was playing to an audience of ghosts in the temple cemetery.
Protector of Hōichi
The priest, realizing the danger, painted the Heart Sūtra on Hōichi's body for protection. However, the priest forgot to paint the verses on Hōichi's ears, which made them vulnerable to the ghosts. The samurai spirit, unable to see Hōichi except for his ears, tore them off as proof of his encounter.
Legacy
Hōichi ultimately freed himself from the spirits by following the priest's instructions and continued his music career despite his injuries. His story remains a well-known tale in Japanese folklore, reflecting the supernatural themes and the role of the biwa in traditional Japanese culture.
