GN stands for Generate Ninja and is a meta-build system primarily designed for building Chromium on multiple platforms. It generates Ninja build files, which then construct the actual product. GN uses POSIX-style paths, both for files and to refer to GN-defined entities. These paths can be relative to the directory containing the BUILD.gn file or "source-absolute," meaning relative to the root of the source tree, and are translated into OS-appropriate paths during commands.

GN has a concept of toolchains, encapsulating compilers and default compilation switches. Additionally, GN allows for managing multiple builds in parallel by setting up custom build directories with specific settings. The Ninja files are automatically regenerated if they are outdated when building in a directory.

GN labels are used to refer to targets defined in a BUILD.gn file. They consist of a source path and a name, and are represented in the form "dir:name". This format provides a flexible and detailed way to organize and identify targets within the build process.
