FarmBot is a practical, engaging, and hands-on tool for learning robotics, nutrition, soil science, biology, coding, and numerous other STEM-based learning objectives. This open-source precision agriculture CNC farming project incorporates a Cartesian coordinate robot farming machine, software, and documentation. The core components include the FarmBot Genesis and supporting software and services.

Hardware Components

• FarmBot Genesis: Enables planting over 30 different crops simultaneously and operates indoors, outdoors, and in covered areas. It provides full automated processes up to harvesting, including sowing, mechanical weed control, and watering, while considering plant age and local weather.
• Electronics Stack: Consists of a Raspberry Pi 3 and Arduino Mega 2560 with a RAMPS 1.4 shield and a camera for data recording.
• Universal Tool Mount and Tools: 3D printed for reproducibility, these tools are designed to be created with hobby-level fused deposition model 3D printers.

Software Components

• FarmBot Web App: Allows remote control and configuration from web browsers on various devices, providing real-time manual controls and logging, a sequence builder, and a drag-and-drop farm designer.
• FarmBot OS: Runs on the Raspberry Pi to maintain connections with the web application and download scheduled events, control in real-time, and upload logs and sensor data.
• Arduino Firmware: Operates the hardware, tools, and sensors, receiving G and F code commands from FarmBot OS and sending back collected data.
• FarmBot Cloud Services: Includes the MQTT Gateway and the future Decision Support System for optimized scheduled events based on relevant data.
• OpenFarm: A free and open database for farming and gardening knowledge, providing crop information to the web app.
