$DOG, also known as DOG•GO•TO•THE•MOON, is a memecoin that was airdropped to holders of the Bitcoin Ordinal "Runestone" until April 21, 2024. It was launched using the Bitcoin Runes Protocol and has a total supply of 100 billion tokens. The token is listed on several exchanges, including CoinEx, Gate.io, and BitMart, and its price has varied since its introduction.

Background

$DOG was created by Leonidas, a well-known developer of Ordinals and the founder of the Runestone project. The token was airdropped to all eligible Runestone holders, making it the most widely held memecoin or Runes token at the time of its issuance. The Runes Protocol was designed by Casey Rodarmor to enhance the issuance of fungible tokens within the BTC ecosystem.

Technical Details

Runes tokens, including $DOG, are bound to Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs) on the Bitcoin network. These UTXOs serve as pointers to the Runes tokens, which are recorded in the OP-RETURN of the transaction. This method differentiates Runes tokens from other tokenization protocols like Ordinals and BRC-20.
