Datums
Datums are theoretically perfect points, axes, lines, planes, or combinations thereof that establish the origin and direction of measurements for a part's features. They exist within a datum reference frame composed of three mutually perpendicular intersecting planes. Since measurements cannot be made directly from theoretical surfaces, datums are simulated by processing equipment, such as surface plates, gages, and vises.
Datums are used to immobilize and orient a part relative to a datum reference frame, providing a structure for the part's dimensions and geometry. The three mutually perpendicular planes of the datum reference frame provide the origin and direction for measurements.
Selecting Datums
Datums are selected based on design requirements and functional needs. Good datum features include functional surfaces, mating surfaces, readily accessible surfaces, and surfaces of sufficient size to allow repeatable measurements.
Applications of Datums
