Cryptochrome is a class of flavoproteins found in plants and animals that are sensitive to blue light. They are involved in the regulation of circadian rhythms and the sensing of magnetic fields. The name "cryptochrome" combines the Greek words "ryptos," meaning hidden, and "chroma," meaning color. There are two main subtypes of cryptochromes: CRY1 and CRY2, which differ in their functions and roles in various organisms. Both CRY1 and CRY2 are key components of the circadian clock and are involved in light-dependent and light-independent regulation of the clock in different species.

Functions and Roles

  • CRY1: Acts as a transcriptional repressor and is a major component of the circadian clock in plants and animals. It regulates the circadian cycle in a light-dependent manner in insects and plants and functions as a light-independent inhibitor of the CLOCK-BMAL1 components of the circadian clock in mammals.

  • CRY2: Acts similarly to CRY1 in mammals but also has distinct roles, particularly in defining the pace of the circadian cycle. Both CRY1 and CRY2 are involved in the sensing of magnetic fields in some species.

Evolutionary Conservation

  • Evolutionary History: Cryptochromes are highly conserved proteins across all kingdoms of life, derived from the photolyase superfamily. They retain FAD-binding capabilities but have lost their original DNA repair enzymatic activity in eukaryotes.

  • Conservation: The structures and functions of CRY1 and CRY2 are widely conserved across plants and animals.
