About ConstitutionDAO
ConstitutionDAO was a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) formed in November 2021. The DAO's primary goal was to purchase an original copy of the United States Constitution through a Sotheby's auction. The project successfully raised $47 million in Ether cryptocurrency but ultimately lost the auction with a bid of $43.2 million. Following the auction, the DAO disbanded and refunded contributions to participants minus Ethereum fees.
The PEOPLE Token
The PEOPLE token was the donation certificate issued to contributors to ConstitutionDAO. Although the DAO itself is no longer active, the PEOPLE tokens are still in existence. The project's organizers clarified that the tokens hold no inherent rights, governance, or utility beyond their initial use for contributors to redeem refunds in Ethereum.
Historical Context
The ConstitutionDAO experiment was notable for its demonstration of the power of decentralized organizations. It was compared to other significant internet movements, such as the GameStop short squeeze. The project showcased the potential of DAOs to change the way people collaborate and make purchases.
ConstitutionDAO2
After the initial auction, a separate group, ConstitutionDAO2, formed to bid on another original copy of the U.S. Constitution. This group managed to raise $313,000 before the auction was postponed.
