Overview
Chain-key Bitcoin (CKBTC) is a token on the Internet Computer that is backed 1:1 by bitcoin (BTC). This means that 1 CKBTC can always be redeemed for 1 BTC. Unlike other tokens pegged to bitcoin, the CKBTC token does not rely on a third-party bridge for the conversion between BTC and CKBTC, making it a substantially more secure alternative to “wrapped” tokens. The advantages of CKBTC include fast and cheap transfers, with transactions finalizing within a few seconds.
Architecture
CKBTC functionality is built upon the Bitcoin integration of the Internet Computer, allowing canisters to receive, hold, and send bitcoin. The ckBTC minter and ckBTC ledger are two canisters that provide the CKBTC functionality. The ckBTC minter mints new ckBTC tokens when it receives bitcoin and burns ckBTC tokens when an owner requests a withdrawal of bitcoin. The ckBTC ledger is ICRC-1 and ICRC-2 compliant, updating balance accounts and executing mint and burn operations.
Technical Details
CKBTC uses chain-key cryptography and Internet Computer smart contracts to directly hold raw bitcoin. This allows for fast and secure transactions without the need for intermediaries. The system includes "know-your-transaction" (KYT) checks to ensure that only "clean" bitcoins back the issued CKBTC tokens, providing an additional layer of security.
