Cerium is a chemical element with the symbol Ce and atomic number 58. It is a soft, ductile, silvery-white metal that tarnishes when exposed to air. Cerium was first identified by Jöns Berzelius and Wilhelm Hisinger in the winter of 1803-1804 and independently discovered by Martin Klaproth around the same time. It is the most abundant of the lanthanide series and is about as abundant as tin or lead in the Earth’s crust.

Cerium is found in numerous minerals, including bastnasite, monazite, and cerite. The metal is not found in its pure form in nature but is extracted from these minerals. It has several practical applications due to its unique properties, including:

• Catalyst and Refining: Cerium oxide is used as a catalyst in various industrial processes, such as self-cleaning ovens and catalytic converters.
• Lighting and Electronics: Cerium is used in flat-screen TVs, low-energy light bulbs, and floodlights.
• Pigments: Cerium(III) sulfide is a non-toxic compound used as a pigment due to its bright red color.
• Fuel Additives: Cerium oxide is being studied as an additive to diesel fuel to improve combustion efficiency and reduce emissions.
• Fire and Spark Generation: Cerium is used in mischmetal alloy to create sparks in lighters, as it reacts with other elements when ignited.
