Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) is a suite of programs used to generate alignments between a nucleotide or protein sequence. This tool compares nucleotide or protein sequences and calculates the statistical significance of matches, identifying regions of similarity between sequences. BLAST is designed to find local regions of sequence similarity, which allows it to detect domains or shorter stretches of sequence similarity. It is commonly used for annotating an unknown sequence by identifying putative genes or proteins and determining if a gene or a protein is related to other known genes or proteins. The tool works by breaking the query into short subsequences called "words" and identifying these "hot spots" in the database, thus allowing for faster and more efficient alignments.
